What began as a small, local effort has grown into the largest single-day food drive in the United States. In 1976, dedicated Letter Carriers from NALC Branch 576 in Phoenix and Glendale took it upon themselves to help their community by collecting food donations in their own vehicles for St. Mary's Food Bank. Their grassroots effort laid the foundation for something much bigger.

In 1990, Branch 576 President Mike Crowley and Food Drive Coordinator John Schwander helped bring wider attention to the drive through media outreach and artwork from American Cartoonist Bil Keane -
creator of the Family Circus comic strip.
The following year, during the 1991 NALC Arizona State Convention, then-NALC President Vincent Sombrotto saw the impact of the program firsthand. Inspired by its success, he invited Branch 576 organizers to present the idea to AFL-CIO Community Services leaders in Washington, DC—where it was enthusiastically embraced.

On October 26, 1991, the NALC launched a 10-city pilot program. Its overwhelming success paved the way for a national expansion. By May 15, 1993, the first full-scale national food drive brought together more than 220 branches across all 50 states. Today, the NALC Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive has become a nationwide tradition—collecting billions of pounds of food to help families in need and making a lasting difference in communities across America.
On the second Saturday of May (05/09/26), bag up non-perishable food and leave it by your mail box for your Letter Carrier to pick up. All donations will benefit St. Mary's Food Bank and St. Vincent De Paul. These amazing organizations need your help to assist Arizona Families -Thank You!
